Reverse Garbage Queensland is currently seeking an experienced, creative and well organised Workshop Co-ordinator to implement and deliver its Eco-Arts workshop program. This is a permanent part time position for four 7.6 hour days per week.

Reverse Garbage Queensland is a not-for-profit re-use centre located in Woolloongabba, Brisbane. We collect high quality industrial discards from a wide range of industries around Brisbane, diverting them from landfill and making them available at low cost to the community through our warehouse at 20 Burke Street. Our workshop and visual arts program uses these materials to encourage the creative and practical re-use of salvaged resources whilst educating workshop participants about the issues surrounding waste and consumption.

The position is principally an administrative role involving tasks such as workshop development and scheduling, rostering of casual workshop facilitators, liaising with potential customers by phone and email and the creation of quotes and invoices. It also contains a significant hands-on workshop facilitation component however and the successful applicant must also be available for occasional weekend work delivering workshops at weekend festivals and events.

Selection Criteria:

Essential skills/experience:
Experience in designing and implementing a diverse range of visual arts-based workshops to groups of people, including young children, teenagers and adults

  • A strong understanding of issues surrounding waste, resource use and sustainability
  • A strong commitment to environmental protection
  • Project management experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively with casual workshop facilitators and other co-op workers
  • Working knowledge of the Education sector
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Current blue card for working with children
  • Current manual drivers license and clean record for 5 years
  • Proficiency operating computers and basic office suite software (word processing, spreadsheets etc.)
  • Ability to develop and organise workshop proposals, develop budgets and meet financial targets

Desirable skills/experience:
Business development skills - ability to develop, promote, expand and profitably run the workshop program

  • An understanding of the philosophy and practice of consensus decision making
  • Previous work in a community based organisation

Reverse Garbage Queensland is a worker-run co-operative and applicants with an interest in becoming a member/director of the co-op in the long term will be will be favourably regarded.

Remuneration: This is a permanent part time position. The wage is $19.44/hr and is based on the general retail industry award. Normal award penalty rates apply for Saturday and Sunday work.

Sales Assistant

Reverse Garbage Queensland is a not-for-profit worker-run co-operative based in Woolloongabba. We work to conserve the earth’s natural resources by diverting useful materials away from the waste stream and consequently reducing the demand for 'new' products and materials. To do this, we collect a wide range of discards, offcuts and unwanted items from industries, businesses and households around the Greater Brisbane area and make them available at low cost to the community through our retail warehouse at 20 Burke Street. We also seek to change the communities attitudes to consumption and waste by conducting environmental-art and education workshops for participants of all ages. We are a highly respected part of our community and are an essential resource for the Arts and Education sector in South East Queensland. We are committed to workplace equity and the values of environmental, social and economic sustainability.

We are currently seeking someone to fill the position of Retail Sales Assistant. It is a permanent part-time position of three days (22.8 hours) per week. The successful applicant will also be required to work a rotating Saturday shift every three weeks in sorting or sales as well as participate in other work of the co-operative.

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing a high level of customer service while on sales, assisting in the sorting and pricing of the raw materials that we collect whilst on sales and carrying out a variety of retail focused administrative tasks associated with the sales area and gift shop.

Selection Criteria:

Essential skills/experience:

  • Retail sales management/customer service experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Good general fitness and dexterity
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to keep appropriate records in both paper and digital format
  • Knowledge of and commitment to environmental protection
  • An active interest in art and/or craft practice

Desirable but not essential skills/experience:

  • Visual merchandising
  • Graphic Design
  • Work in a community based organisation
  • Understanding of the philosophy and practice of consensus decision making
  • Ability to interpret financial reports and budgets
  • Ability to develop policies and procedures
  • Ability to assist with strategic planning
